Coscine (Coscine)


Coscine is a generic research data management platform that provides universities and research institutions with an infrastructure
for managing, storing, and archiving digital research data in a discipline- and format-independent manner, in accordance with
the FAIR principles. Coscine promotes high-quality research by supporting the FAIR principles during the active project phase
through the implementation of the FAIR Digital Object concept. Coscine is developed by the IT Center of the RWTH, operations
and support were consistently funded through Coscine.nrw and it is operated exclusively on servers in Germany. Four modules
are available for user organizations to choose from, in order to optimally meet institutional needs, existing storage resources,
and the desired level of integration. Module 1 covers the use of Coscine, Module 2 provides access to FDM:Storage.nrw, and
Module 3 covers the use of the Coscine-JARDS application platform. Module 4 allows for the integration of individual storage
resources. Coscine is, among other things, part of the DH.NRW service portfolio (Coscine.nrw), funded by the NFDI4ING and
NFDI-MatWerk consortia, and a member of the EOSC FIDELIS network for trustworthy digital repositories. Coscine is being further
developed based on, among other things, the requirements of RWTH’s Excellence Strategy, Coscine.nrw, and the participating
NFDI consortia.

Coscine enables researchers to store or link their data during the active project phase, annotate it with machine-readable
and interpretable metadata, reference it with persistent identifiers (PIDs), share it with project partners, and archive it
for up to ten years after the project ends. We promote high-quality research by supporting the discovery of and access to
data through the implementation of the FAIR Digital Object concept. With a central search index, Coscine facilitates the discovery
and reuse of data. To enable effective metadata management across all research fields, Coscine offers flexible description
options using administrative, bibliographic, and discipline-specific metadata based on established technologies (SHACL/RDF).
Metadata is managed in a structured manner and represented as a semantic knowledge graph, which enables machine-readable interpretation
and linking of the data. Thanks to its low-threshold login options (NFDI AAI & ORCiD), Coscine also facilitates global collaboration
within the framework of research projects. All of the Coscine features mentioned are accessible via both our web interface
and our API.
