Institute of Medical Psychology (IMP-UKHD) Save as PDFShow print view

The laboratory of the Institute of Medical Psychology is located at Bergheimer Straße 20 in Heidelberg. It is a wet laboratory with a preparation room and two storage rooms with temperature-controlled deep freezers (-20, -40 and -80 degrees Celsius), in which biomaterials (saliva and blood samples) are stored during analyses. The laboratory offers quantitative analyses of the parameters alpha-amylase, cortisol, estradiol, oxytocin, progesterone and testosterone from saliva and blood samples. For quality assurance purposes, the manufacturer's specifications of the assays as well as common quality control parameters (e.g. sensitivity, specificity or intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation) are taken into account. Furthermore, the laboratory regularly participates in inter-laboratory ring trials. Requests to use the service can be made by employees of Heidelberg University Hospital (UK-HD) as well as by persons outside the UK-HD. Upon request, the necessary materials for sample collection are provided by IMP-UKHD. After completion of the analyses, the raw data will be processed according to standardized pipelines for further use by the respective project, and quality parameters of the measurements will be made available (see above). The costs for carrying out the analyses as well as the necessary materials are subject to a fee and are determined on the basis of a fee schedule.

Within the framework of a research cooperation, the laboratory offers the quantification of hormones and enzymes from saliva samples and partly from blood samples. In addition, the laboratory offers support in the preparation of third-party funding applications, in the planning and execution of sample collection, as well as in data preparation and statistical data analysis. Materials for sample collection are provided upon request. Prior to the start of data analyses, the persons involved in the projects receive an introduction to the safe and hygienic handling of the materials. In the laboratory, the samples are further processed and prepared according to standard procedures. The analyses of the parameters estradiol, progesterone and testosterone from saliva are performed with luminescence immunoassays. The analyses of cortisol and oxytocin from saliva and estradiol, progesterone and testosterone from serum and plasma are performed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Analyses of alpha-amylase are performed using a quantitative enzyme kinetic assay. After completion of the analyses, the raw data and quality parameters of the measurement, which have been prepared according to standardized pipelines, are made available to the respective projects. After completion of the analyses, the samples will be either destroyed or returned to the respective project partners.
