prometheus is a distributed digital image archive for art and cultural studies. The prometheus image archive brings together heterogeneous and distributed image and media databases from a wide range of institutions and enables image searches through a single interface. The image providers make their databases available to research and teaching free of charge. Currently, over 120 image databases from the history of art, design and architecture, theology, history and archaeology and other image-based disciplines with over 3 million images can be searched.

prometheus - The distributed digital image archive for research and teaching is used for scientific image research and is primarily aimed at scientists and students in cultural history and image-based subjects. In contrast to other image archives, prometheus is not a centralised image database from a technical point of view. Rather, prometheus brings together image material and information from decentralised image databases. In doing so, prometheus can basically integrate all forms of metadata and is therefore an open system into which imaging institutions can integrate their own data. In addition to image searches based on metadata, prometheus also offers various tools for collecting images in project folders, for downloading, presenting and publishing images and for creating own uploads. These tools are primarily intended for use in academic teaching.
