CAU - Microbiome Platform (CAU-Microbiome)

The Microbiome Platform at the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB) and the Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM)
combines correlative microbiome studies using high-throughput sequencing with the functional characterization of microbial
components. Multi-OMIC studies conducted here, integrate microbial profiles, metabolic, genetic, phenotypic, and nutritional
data, are performed using standardized high-throughput methods to identify relevant factors and mechanisms related to microbiome-host
interaction.
Specifically, high-throughput methods (biobanking, sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction, and sequencing-based
diversity analyses) are combined with cultivation and whole-genome sequencing approaches to identify microbes and their metabolic
capabilities. In addition, a strain collection of microbes associated with humans is being established. Based on previous
findings and the overall objective of the studies, bioreactors (Infors HT Multifors 2) can also be used to perform physiological
tests to investigate the growth kinetics, substrate utilization, and metabolic by-products of individual microorganisms under
different conditions.

Scientific Services
The Microbiome Platform offers services in the field of consulting, implementation, and evaluation of issues related to the
determination of microbial diversity using high-throughput sequencing and the functional characterization of microbes within
the framework of scientific cooperation. The platform's services include project planning (strategic planning, initialization
of sample collection), subsequent coordination of the technical implementation of the project (sample logistics, evaluation
of quality controls, troubleshooting, etc.), and the selection and implementation of suitable methodology (extraction of nucleic
acids, investigation of microbial diversity via high-throughput amplicon and metagenome sequencing, cultivation and whole
genome sequencing for the identification of microbes in a specific sample, establishment of a strain collection of associated
microbes, determination of the metabolic capabilities of isolated microbes and complex microbial communities. Furthermore,
support is offered for the bioinformatic evaluation of generated sequencing data, also with regard to the publication of the
results in suitable journals.
